Family of an evangelist shot dead allegedly for attempting to rob students of the Garden City University College in Kumasi has denied their relative was a robber.
Akwasi Addai, father of three was shot by a night watchman whose gun he attempted to snatch at a private hostel at Kenyasi.
Addai and three others were said to have gone to the hostel on a robbery expedition, but were overpowered by the watchman whose name is being withheld.
His body lay supine position in a pool of blood at the hostel when Nhyira News visited the scene as traumatized female students at the hostel looked on in disbelief.
Moments after news of the incident got to the entire Kenyasi township, some relatives of the deceased rushed to the scene, and vented their anger at the students by throwing stones at them.
Addai’s sister, Adwoa Adomah denied her brother was a robber.
Amid tears, she tells Nhyira FM she least suspected her brother who is a known preacher in the area.
“How someone can go to robbery without any gun or offensive weapons,” she inquires from this reporter. He is a member of the Deeper Life Church, even last night he attended church with his family’ she said.
What she concedes is baffling is how her brother was spotted at the hostel at that odd hour at about 2.00 am on Monday.
Students at the hostel disagree. They say they have been living in fear as a result of consistent robbery attack on them.
They say the deceased was one of their attackers who have been robbing students of their laptops, money and other personal belongings.
“They have been coming here almost each day to harass us. Sometimes they will meet in the street, snatch your laptop, mobile phones and cash. We sometimes cannot even attend lecture on campus, we need police protection because it is becoming too much,” a female student said.
Meanwhile, the police say it is too early to comment on the issue as they launch investigations into the shooting.
