Ex-England youth international midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong says his maiden call-up to the Ghana national team is the ‘proudest moment of his football career’.
The Arsenal midfielder, who is on loan at Fulham, was handed his first Ghana call-up on Tuesday for this month’s World Cup qualifier against Sudan in Kumasi.
The 21-year-old, who has played for England at youth level, only secured permission from FIFA late last year to switch nationality – making him eligible for Black Stars selection.
The process of seeking the nationality switch delayed for nearly two years after taking the brave decision to quit England when he was a key player for their youth side.
He has now demonstrated his extreme loyalty to Ghana, greeting his maiden call-up with huge pride, saying it is a dream come true.
“Proudest moment of my football career,” the Arsenal midfielder tweeted moments after coach Kwesi Appiah announced his squad for the game in Kumasi.
“Nearly two years I’ve been waiting for this day. It’s overwhelming.”
Frimpong was born in Ghana before he migrated to England as a tender age where he developed his football career.
He visited Ghana last year when he was recovering from injury and Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi visited him to assure him of the support of the country.
The defensive midfielder will become only the fourth player to have successfully secured a nationality switch in order to play for the Black Star – following in footsteps of Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Adam Kwarasey.
