The Committee on Human and Peoples Right (Ghana) has appealed to the Electoral Commission to extend the period for the on-going limited voters registration exercise.
“The remarkable interest and excitement generated by the registration exercise is an indication of the growing consciousness of Ghanaians towards their civil responsibility of voting”.
A statement issued and signed by Veronica Ayikwei Kofie, the Executive Secretary of the group said the negative events characterizing the registration process should be a source of worry to all peace loving Ghanaians.
“The reports of shortage of registration forms and other logistics, prevention of some persons bearing particular tribe names from registering and inadequate publicity constitute a recipe for disenchantment and confusion that can have dire consequences”.
The statement urged all political parties to drum home to their followers the need to exercise patience, tolerance, restraint and high sense of nationalism.
“Indeed all and sundry have the responsibility of keeping Ghana in one piece for the present generation and posterity”.
It recommended that the Inter party Advisory Committee (IPAC) should be institutionalized and replicated right down to the lower levels of the political spectrum to promote unity in diversity in the handling of issues.
The group also appealed to all Ghanaians to respect the electoral laws and appealed to parents and guardians to restrain their underage children from registering.
It urged contributors to political debates to pipe down and exercise decorum in their discussions in order not to create tension during the political season.
