Police in Accra have begun a manhunt for a man and his son who are said to have attacked and wounded two policemen in the suburb of Teiman.
The personnel say they went to the community to arrest a man accused of fraud but family members and neighbours of the suspect attacked them with sticks and other objects.
Police say the suspect and his son are currently on the run but his daughter has been arrested for locking the policemen in to be beaten.
The inspector who was in charge of the team suffered bruises on his chest, while the other officer who was hit on the head, has a big plaster over it.
“In the process of assaulting us, the man [suspect] managed to escape with his hands in cuffs. The men numbering about six together with five women pounced on us and beat us mercilessly.
“When we were about to run for our lives, one of the ladies locked us in the house and the assault intensified,” he narrated to Joy News’ Maxwell Agbagba.
According to him, he had to scale the wall in order to open the gate to the house from behind to get a cab for one of his men who had been assaulted.
Pictures sighted by Joy News showed one of the assaulted officers sitting in a plastic chair all soaked in blood.
The assaulted officer told the reporter the son of the suspect hit him on the head with a stick in an attempt to stop him from handcuffing his father.
“I was about to handcuff the suspect when I heard someone shouting from behind me, ‘leave the man alone!’ So I turned only to feel a sharp pain of a stick on my head,” the officer recounted.
The police are investigating while they keep those arrested in custody.
