“Fear delegates” has become a popular statement during internal party elections in Ghana.
It is believed that delegates are influenced in several ways in their voting decisions, leading to the disappointment of some candidates.
The late former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Owusu Afriyie, popularly called Sir John, made the famous statement after suffering a shocking defeat in his re-election bid.
He had gone for re-election with the assurance of delegates that he was winning. However, the huge assurance turned out to be a total deception.
Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party, Francis Addai-Nimoh says going into the November 4th primary, every individual must be feared.
“I will not say fear delegates, I will say fear human beings because the delegates do not come from any other planet. They are all human beings just like us. Some are even my relatives” he said.
Many believe that what these delegates say in public is contrary to what they do and say in their private and secret meetings.
Some delegates in the Atwima Nwabigya North Constituency of the Ashanti region believe they must be feared regardless.
“I was supporting one candidate because of his message but I stopped after his opponent spoke to me. Even as we speak, things can change during the election day,” a delegate said.
Another delegate from Nwabiagya North, Kofi Boakye told JoyNews “The aspirants must be afraid of us. We are more wicked than the devil. They shouldn’t think we will pardon them during the election day.”
Meanwhile, others claim they are undecided on who to vote for on November 4th.
