Five persons have been arrested by the Mamprobi police in Accra for alleged rioting and vandalizing a number of pre-mix fuel stations at Chorkor. The suspects, said to be among a large number of fishermen, went on the rampage and destroyed property worth more than ¢l00 million.A source at the Mamprobi Police Station gave the names of those arrested as Lanquaye Botchwey, alias Lanquaye Giant, the alleged leader of the group, Amon Kottey, Lanteye Bibio, Odartey Gayoyo and Kweikuma, alias Busanga. They were transferred to the Dansoman Divisional Police Headquarters, after a mob had attempted to forcibly free them from the Mamprobi Police Station. The source stated that a section of the fishermen at Chorkor wrote a letter to the General Secretary of the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council, Mr Noel. Joseph Narh, inviting him and the other executive members to attend an emergency meeting with them at Chorkor at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4, 2007.It said, to the surprise of everybody, at about 7 a.m. on Tuesday, about 200 of the fishermen wearing red bands went on the rampage. Chanting war songs, they vandalised three pre-mix fuel stations in the area without any provocation.According to the source, the mob also broke into the office of one of the pre-mix fuel dealers and stole GH¢2,500 (¢25 million) being two days sales kept in the room.It said that, not satisfied with their action, the rampaging mob entered the residence of Mr Narh to physically attack him, but fortunately he was not in.The source said a report was made to the Mamprobi police who managed to arrest the five ringleaders of the mob.It stated while the police kept the suspects in the cells pending further investigations into the matter, the mob entered the police station in an attempt to vandalize the place and free their colleagues. The suspects were therefore transferred to Dansoman for further investigations.Source: Daily Graphic
