Frank Davies, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Legal and Constitutional Committee, has insisted that Ghanaians should not dictate how the party and its allies respond to the suspension of Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking on Citi FM on Thursday, 1st May, Mr Davies rejected calls for the NPP to confine itself to legal proceedings rather than public demonstrations.
“When there is the need for a court process to be considered it would be done. So let us wait. Nobody should lampoon or nobody should rush anybody into doing anything. Let us see what happens,” he remarked, arguing that a constitutional democracy affords multiple avenues for redress.
Mr Davies went on to highlight that the NPP is not alone in voicing concerns over the Chief Justice’s suspension. He cited the Trades Union Congress’s recent statement as proof of wider national unease.
“I’m saying it is not only the NPP and the other political parties who have had a bite at this matter. I said Organised Labour today made their voice heard. For all you know, Organised Labour may be in court tomorrow. Do you know that? No! Do I know that? No!” he added.
The NPP and other opposition parties have planned a demonstration on Monday, 5 May, to protest what they describe as political meddling in the judiciary.
The party has vowed to resist what it perceives as unconstitutional actions and an erosion of judicial independence.
