The Accra High Court has issued a new directive concerning the burial of highlife legend Daddy Lumba, ordering the applicants in the ongoing family dispute to pay GH₵2million by 2:00 pm today, failing which the funeral will proceed as scheduled tomorrow.
The court recalled the lawyers involved in the case during proceedings and explained that the payment is intended to defray any costs incurred during the funeral preparations if the burial is ultimately called off.
This latest ruling follows an earlier injunction by the same court, which had restrained Kofi Owusu, the family head (Abusuapanyin), from organizing the funeral and barred Transitions Funeral Home from releasing Daddy Lumba’s body. The injunction was initially granted amid a dispute between the late musician’s maternal relatives and the family head over funeral leadership and fund management.
The court had previously emphasized the need for consultation with the immediate family in accordance with Akan customs, directing the first respondent to convene a stakeholder meeting within three weeks to agree on a new burial date.
With the 2 million cedis condition now in place, the High Court appears to be balancing due process with the need to allow the legendary musician’s burial to proceed, while also ensuring that costs associated with any changes are covered.
Daddy Lumba, who passed away on 26 July 2025 at the age of 60, remains a towering figure in Ghana’s music industry, and public attention continues to focus on both his legacy and the unfolding family dispute over his final rites.
