Son of the late founder of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Henry Lartey has lashed out at the attitude adopted by the leadership of the party. He is likely to face the party’s disciplinary committee for allegedly presenting himself before members of the general public as party chairman. Speaking to Asempa News moments after the party's General Secretary Ali Adam had spoken to Asempa News about the intention to haul him before the disciplinary committee for usurping powers of the chairman, he said none of those asking for disciplinary measures against him has the power to do so. The executives issued a statement calling on all political parties, the Electoral Commission and the Nation at large to avoid dealing with Mr. Henry Lartey in that capacity. The statement said Mr. Henry Lartey who gained full membership status from the party only last month, has arrogated to himself the position of the national Chairman of the party. But Mr. Lartey says the supposed party chairman and secretary are allegedly rooted in deep corrupt practices that are shameful to the image of the GCPP. This, he said, has incensed him compelling him to act that way. He accused the Party Chairman John Thompson and Ali Adam, General Secretary, of stealing half of the money donated by former President Kufuor during the final funeral rites of his late father. He also alleged that the two conspired to write letters to foreign mission in Ghana soliciting for funds to cater for some party members in the Agona Swedro area after a recent rainstorm that hit the town. Mr. Henry Lartey, who gave the indication that he would not sit and watch the works of his father go down the drain, said these activities of the Party Chairman and the General Secretary were an embarrassment to the party. He said issues were being addressed internally but once they, Mr. John Thompson and Ali Adam, have gone public, he was left with no option but to tell his side of the story to the public as well. Mr. Latey tells Asempa News, he had already informed the Electoral Commission about the corrupt practices, and that the EC now does not recognize them as party members. He says, his actions is backed by the rank and file of the party as well as the Ghanaians to reclaim the party his Dad built from the scratch. Citing provisions from the GCCP’s constitution on party membership and character, he said the two individuals have by their action thrown themselves out of the party. He said he was informed by the leadership of the party that the two men were elected in an election that was not supervised by the, which implies that their election was null and void. An interim Committee has been put in place to steer the affairs of the party till they go for congress. Earlier, The General Secretary of the Great Consolidated Popular Party, Ali Adams had told Asempa Today that Henry Lartey would be summoned before the party for arrogating to himself certain powers. He said the fact that the father is the founder of the party does not mean that it is the property of the family. Mr. Ali Adams debunked the notion that the late Dan Lartey, founder of the party is the owner and added that the chairman of the party is the leader per the party’s constitution. With the on-going confusion in the party, analysts are wondering if the party can weather the storm. The late Mr Daniel Augustus Lartey popularly called "Mr Domestication", leader of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), who was presidential candidate of the GCPP in 2000 elections passed away on Monday evening December 28, 2009 in Accra. He set alight the 2000 election with his popular slogan "domestication" as a way of increasing local production. He was only stopped from having bite at the 2008 presidential race when the Electoral Commission disqualified him for submitting his nomination papers late.
