The Ghana Football Association held a meeting with the Black Stars to congratulate striker Abdul Majeed Waris after he was named the Swedish Premier League’s Player of the Year.
GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi told the meeting with the Black Stars the Hacken attacker’s achievements in Sweden has brought honour to the country.
The Black Stars applauded loudly when Nyantakyi announced Waris’ award during the meeting in Portugal ahead of Wednesday friendly against Cape Verde.
“Waris has been named the Swedish Premier League’s Player of the Year and this is a big achievement not only for the striker but for our country,” Nyantakyi told the Black Stars.
“His achievements this season has brought honour to our country so we are encouraging all of you to fight so that you can also emulate what Waris has done to bring honour to our country.”
Waris scooped the award at a glittering ceremony in Stockholm on Monday night.
He beat competition from his Hacken team-mate Martin Ericsson and Malmo midfielder Pontus Jansson to win the coveted Swedish Premier League’s Best Player award.
Waris won the top-scorer award after emerging top scorer of the Swedish top-flight with 23 goals from 29 games.
