Ghana will bid to turn Germany Under-21 star Karim Bellarabi into a full Ghana international if he is interested in playing for the Black Stars.
The 21-year-old scored Bayern Leverkusen's only goal in the 7-1 mauling at the hands of Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, and the GFA are keen to explore the options of converting him into a Ghana international.
The player was born in Berlin in April 1990 to a Ghanaian father and German mother, but has already played for Germany at youth level.
“We have made contact with the father of Bellarabi over the possibility of the youngster playing for Ghana,” GFA president Kwesi Nyantekyie told Ghana Football, the body's official newspaper.
“It has been established that the boy has been following the Black Stars and the exploits of the team which means he has shown an interest in Ghana.
“We will do whatever we can to convince him to play for Ghana. With the early signs he has shown in the Bundesliga and the Champions League he will be a good addition to the attacking force of the Black Stars,” Nyantekyie added.
Bellarabi's father Alhassan says a final decision will be made only by the player.
“When we were in Ghana in December he was very excited. The only thing is that since he grew up in Germany his interest must be nurtured,” he said. “We will do our best to convince him to play for Ghana but ultimately Karim will make his decision.”
Ghana has in the past pursued a vigorous policy of capping players of Ghanaian descent who have played for other countries, with Quincy Owusu Abeyie, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Charles Takyie and Adam Kwarasey all having made the switch.
