Ghana has lost its right to qualify to participate in any international tournaments after failing to pay affiliation fees to the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
The Ghana Tennis Association (GTA) has accrued a bill of $11,000 representing affiliation for three years.
The GTA’s plight is further worsened as the ITF will not advance any further funding for the development of the sport neither will Ghanaian officials participate in future programs put together by world body.
This unfortunate development compounds an already disastrous situation where the local competitive calendar has been close to dormant in the last few years.
President of the Ghana Tennis Association, Enoch Amartey tells JOY Sports “it is the responsibility of the Federation through the National Sports Authority and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. We have sent our budget for the past two to three years and it is locked up at the Ministry of Finance, that’s where the difficulty lies.”
On the implications of Ghana’s suspension, Enoch Amartey adds; “it is going to affect our activities because we get some assistance from the ITF. Moreover, we are looking for sponsors for our internal tournaments, once we’ve been suspended, the ITF will withdraw all of its assistance to us. This implication is dire and is not good for Ghana Tennis because the ITF held Ghana in high esteem.”
