A Development Planner with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly has fingered authorities of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board for not being proactive in developing James Town- a hub of historical sites in Ghana.
Gabriel Nii Teiko Tagoe who works in the Ga Mashie area claimed, the Board could not supply a "simple letter of cooperation" needed by the Dutch and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to fund redevelopment of the Usher Fort and some other sites.
Home to historical edifices like the Accra lighthouse, James Fort and Usher Fort built by colonial masters, James Town's tourism potential still remains underdeveloped.
The potential tourism hotspot is dulled by squalid surroundings and shabby buildings. The community is regarded as the oldest and poorest in the whole region.
The youths are said to have channelled their energies into nefarious activities for a livelihood.
Speaking to Joy News, Nii Teiko Tagoe explained an Old Accra Redevelopment Strategy was sponsored by UNESCO and funded by the European Union (EU) to complete the first phase of renovation of Usher Fort in 2007.
The AMA's Millennium City project also helped in the project, he went on.
According to him, the renovation works provided about 300 jobs.
The second and third phase of the project remain in doubt after AMA lost a $900,000 funding from the EU because the Museum's Board has not been cooperative enough, the AMA official said.
He said there are plans to create an amphitheatre and offices for craft artists in the Fort.
The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board is the custodian of such historical sites.
