The Ghanaian Centre of PEN International has learnt with sadness the sudden death of His Excellency President John Evans Atta Mills, President of the Republic of Ghana on Tuesday, July 24, 2012.
As a learned professor of international repute, the death of President Mills is a loss not only to Ghana, but the global intellectual and academic communities as well.
As advocates and promoters of freedom of speech and expression, the Ghanaian Centre of PEN International salutes the late President for upholding the human rights provisions of Ghana’s constitution. We note particularly his tolerance of the country’s free and unfettered media and how he steadfastly refrained from trampling on the freedoms of speech and expression during his tenure as President.
On behalf of the International Secretariat of PEN International and PEN Centres around the world, we offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and the people of Ghana on his passing. May he Rest in Peace.
Alhaji Abdul-Rahman Harruna Attah, President
Frank Mackay Anim-Appiah, Executive Director
