The Head of JoyNews' Political Desk, Evans Mensah, says Ghanaian electorates are more likely to vote for presidential candidates with solid track record.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, the JoyNews anchor stated that historical achievements play a crucial role in general elections.
His assertion, he said stems from decades of covering political events in the country.
“The voter will respond more favourably, more kindly at the polls to somebody with the track record that has not got serious question marks,” he said on Wednesday.
Mr Mensah’s comment comes as the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) prepares to hold its presidential and parliamentary primaries over the weekend.
Many political analysts, including Mr Mensah, believes that former President John Mahama will emerge as the flagbearer of the party.
He however noted that, even though Mr Mahama is well-marketed, he will face stiff opposition in the general elections in 2024 since Ghanaians will judge him by the achievements he chalked as Vice President and as President.
“John Mahama himself admits that he made mistakes when he began this journey to rehabilitate himself after the 2016 election. He has had a few public events in which he has had to confront his demons.
“And there were so many demons he had to confront. After 2016 when he lost by that historic margin of defeat, he’s been on this journey to rehabilitate. He’s done a good job, but he has been helped by the NPP government. A lot of things have gone wrong,” he said.
