The Ghana Mission in the United States has appealed for calm among the Ghanaian community in New York, following the murder of a Ghanaian taxi driver.

Mr. Kutin Gyimah who hails from the Assin area in the Central Region is said to have been assaulted to death by five assailants who failed to pay for his services at Rockaway.

The attack occurred on Saturday August 13, less than 2-hours after he left his apartment in Bronx, New York, Saturday morning for work.

Police sources say the assailants failed to pay their fare and attempted to rob Mr. Kutin.

The assailants hit his head with an unknown object only to be pronounced dead at the St. John Hospital.

Consul General of Ghana’s Consulate in New York, Kingsley Daniel Atta Boafo, told Joy News that though the Mission has received the best of assurances from Police, he expects Ghanaians in the United States to pay attention to their own security.

He led officials of the Mission to visit the bereaved family to commiserate with them on Monday.

“This innocent hardworking gentleman was using his own taxi to work. According to reports, he was killed by 5 people. That is, 3 men and 2 women. Which of course the Police are still investigating,” he said.

“The Ghana Consulate immediately paid a courtesy call to commiserate with the family where we met the wife, the pastor of their church and some members of the families,” he added.

Mr. Atta Boafo, accompanied by his Deputy, Caleb Amoah and the Head of Information, Frederick Kofi Ameyaw, indicated that Police have assured of thorough investigations into the incident.

“The Police came to meet us and we all had some fruitful exchanges where there was an assurance that the Police are going to support to fast-track or ensure that the investigations are done as fast as possible to bring the perpetrators to book.”

The 52-year-old Kutin is survived by a wife and four children, aged between 3 and 8.

Meanwhile, Mr. Boafo is urging calm among the Ghanaian community while they pay attention to their security.

“We are of the view that all Ghanaians over here in New York are supposed to remain calm and look at the reports that will come from the Police. But we should all be attending to our businesses as usual.

We hope that any move that is being made by any Ghanaian or even an African should be measured and ensure their safety.”
