Ghana's security institutions are crumbling under severe debts, a Member of Parliament for Nkoranza North and Deputy Ranking Member for Defence and Interior Committee has said.
Major (Rtd) Derrick Oduro who was stopped from raising the issues on the floor of Parliament due to the likely security implications told Joy News' Elton John Brobbey the indebtedness of Ghana's security institutions are matters of public record.
Speaker Edward Doe Adjaho told the member that issues about Ghana's security were not to be discussed in public.
He advised members to be circumspect in their discussion on issues relating to the budget.
But the MP disagreed. He told Brobbey the security institutions are facing a lot of challenges which are no different from the ones being experienced in other key sectors of the country.
According to him, contractors who performed services to the security services have not been paid.
"For almost two years now those who supplied fuel for the soldiers, police, prison service, immigration have not been paid and therefore find it difficult to perform their legitimate duties.
"This has nothing to do with security implications.
"Who does not know contractors are not been paid? They are even threatening to send the police, the military to court," he alleged.
He said the country's immigration personnel are having difficulties performing their duties because they lack the logistical support and that is quite dangerous as the country readies to battle smuggling.
The Defence Minister, Benjamin Kunbuor is reported to have said that the challenges being faced are normal, assuring that government is working tirelessly to resolve them.
