Lecturer at the School of Public Health of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has proposed how to determine the current direction of the country's fight against Covid-19
Dr John Amuasi has advised that more attention must be given to Covid-19 death rate rather than the hospitalisation rate to determine the progress of the fight.
According to him, failure to do that may lead to mistakes in admitting patients based on what symptoms they show.
“If you focus on hospitalization rate, the question is what your criteria for hospitalization is.
"You know that the sicker the people, the further we put off the cutoff for hospitalization and give priority for those who are the sickest,” he explained.
Speaking Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, he praised the current low death rates. He added that death is inevitable as the more tests conducted will increase the number of deaths.
“Our death rate compared to other countries in West Africa it’s pretty amazing especially giving our testing rate. Our case fatality rate is standing at barely at 0.5 as opposed to Nigeria which us hovering around 2 or 3 even though they are doing a lot less test per million,” Dr Amuasi said on Joy News’ Super Morning Show.
Meanwhile, he queried the method of recording coronavirus-related deaths. He stated that the number of deaths in this year must be compared to previous years to determine if the overall deaths have increased.
“I have always been saying that it is difficult to use these figure to make any kind of significant projection because of the way this data was collected,” he said.
Currently, there are 28,989 Covid-19 cases , 25,331 recoveries and 153 deaths.
