The Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) lauded the contribution of workers and farmers to the national economy.

It says the country must use the Workers’ Day today to reflect on its treatment of all segments of Ghanaian workers.

The association believes workers, especially farmers whose toil and sweat feed the nation, deserve better recognition.

A statement signed by Executive Chairman of GNAFF, Mr. Emmanuel Terkpetey Mensah, said despite insufficient support, workers, particularly farmers were breaking their backs to sustain the country’s economy.

He commended farmers for their patriotism and loyalty to the nation.

Mr. Mensah, who is leading a process to revamp GNAFF, said a tour of the country had revealed to him that with the necessary support, Ghanaian farmers are capable of feeding Ghana.

“From the Accra plains to Zabzugu in the Northern Region, Gbedembilisi in the Upper East and Kaleo in the Upper West, farmers are hungry to produce,” he said.

But the problems of lack of affordable capital, agric extension services, and access roads, he said, have continued to militate against farmers.

He said the government’s avowed commitment to improve agricultural production is welcome but insisted clear pragmatic policies in the agric and fishing areas are urgently required.

Mr. Mensah believes relying on wholesale importation of food is not only dangerous but injurious to the economy.
