Thirty people have graduated from the dress making module of the NYEP at the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district in the Upper West Region.
The module introduced last year was in fulfillment of the President’s promise to make life better for all, DCE of the area Mr Mumuni Isaac Dramani told the graduands.
He said the Mills’ led government is committed to addressing the two issues of illiteracy and unemployment in the country and this has found expression in the creation of new NYEP modules nation-wide, skills training programmes as can be evidenced with the creation of the Local Enterprise and Skills Development Programme(LESDEP) and Urban Poverty Reduction Programme (UPRP).
He thanked the tailors and dress makers association in the district whose profound contribution has facilitated the implementation of the module.
Mr Dramani said statistical evidence shows that less than 40% of the country’s population of 24 million is literate with over 60% of Ghanaians unskilled.
This according to him explains why the NDC government under President Mills is leaving no stone unturned in providing better education for the future leaders of the country and by expanding the non-formal education for adult population in the end to give vocational training to the unskilled so that they can acquire some means of livelihoods.
The district youth employment coordinator of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district Kpeafaa Stephen said it is government’s desire to empower the youth economically that the NYEP in collaboration with Asongtaba Cottage Industries, introduced more modules under the NDC administration.
The Member of Parliament for Sawla-Tuna Kalba Honorable Dari Sorditey who was present at the graduation ceremony observed that the government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) does not believe in putting money in the pocket of the individual, instead the NDC government will rather opt for real development projects that will better the lot of the people.
Sorditey said within the first three years of the NDC in government, it has given the area thirty nine(39) boreholes compared with only eight during the entire period of the NPP’s administration, this he said is a clear indication that the NDC is out to better the lot of the people of the area and Ghanaians in general.
He said the decision of the NDC to continue with some policies of the previous government is to create an enabling opportunity for all people in the country irrespective of their political affiliation.
He said the government has also awarded the Sawla-Fulfuso road which is a major link between the district and the regional capital, Tamale.
He advised the graduands to put to good use the sewing machines which the government acquired with hard currency. He said six months of training is not enough for the graduands and advised them to constantly practice as that will improve their lives by getting them income.
