The Coalition of NGOs in Health says government has dozed off in its Covid-19 fight.
According to Dr Gabriel Bernakuu, the Coalition’s leader, this has led to a spike in positive cases within the past two weeks.
He said there is the need for the enhancement of the capacity of health facilities to contain the virus rather than government touting its achievement in the management of Covid-19 pandemic.
Ghana recorded an average of about 282 positive cases in a day between June 1 and June 13 with a total of 16 infected persons succumbing to the virus.
“We dozed off in Ashanti Region thinking that all was well. You cannot win Covid-19 fight just by standing on a national platform to say we are doing well. Ghana is the best in the sub-region until you see the records confirming that,” he told Daniel Dadzie host of Prime Morning on Joy Prime, Tuesday.
Dr Bernakuu also indicated that the National Response Team has failed to rope in private health institutions in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We do support the intervention for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). We have a very strong belief that if MMDCEs are supported and District Chief Executives (DCEs) chairs the taskforce with collaboration from the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Ghana Medical Association(GMA), Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), CSOs, chieftaincy institutions, religious bodies, and youth groups including political parties; the fight will be much easier.”
The Coalition of NGOs in Health has proposed that government decentralised the Covid-19 fight.
The Coalition believes the move will engender community support to contain the virus and return the country to normalcy.
He lamented the poor collaboration between social medicine and various public health interventions rolled out by government and called for drastic measures to be instituted in order for Ghana’s health system not to be overwhelmed.
