Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, has disclosed that government will engage institutions and groups that feel the UNIPASS project at the port will affect the success of the Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).
The Minister explained that this engagement process will seek to address all concerns and end the tension between stakeholders at the ports over the new integrated port management system.
Alan Kyerematen told Joy Business that trade facilitation was an important part of the AfCFTA deal and hence the success of the UNIPASS deal was paramount.
President of the Ghana Institute of freight forwarders (GIFF), Edward Akrong, has said the new UNIPASS system has recorded only one transaction since its operationalisation by his members.
According to him, this is a clear indication that the government is not prepared to implement the new system.
Mr Akrong told Joy Business in an interview that the state stands to lose revenue due to the slow processes at the clearing points.
