Government has been urged to device a means to stem the upsurge of pornographic materials, especially among children, if the country's hope for a responsible future generation could be realised. Reverend Seth Agyekum, Missionary in charge of the Agape Children Ministry, a philanthropic organisation, said display of pornographic magazines on newsstands and through the Internet accounted for high sexual immortality among the youth. The Reverend Minister made the call in Accra, when his Ministry presented assorted drugs worth ¢5 million to inmates of the Borstal Institute of the Ghana Prisons Service on Saturday. Rev Agyekum said the Censorship and Cinematography Board under the Ministry of Information must censor all films, especially foreign ones containing such obscenity and nudity, adding that Internet café operators should also act as watchdogs on children who used their services. He also asked the National Media Commission to deploy a task force to seize and destroy such materials displayed publicly. In his interaction with the inmates, Rev Agyekum said it was unfortunate that discipline was often seen in the light of punishment and not as an act for transformation, saying: "This is why despite various campaigns for discipline in the country, even by our own Vice President Aliu Mahama, it had been difficult to see the society transforming from undisciplined attitudes and lifestyles" Rev. Agyekum mentioned parental irresponsibility, peer influence and school dropout as major factors leading to juvenile delinquencies and appealed to parents to always provide for the needs of their children. He promised that his Ministry would continue to support inmates with medical outreach programmes, games, and even adopt some of the inmates. The Reverend Minister also appealed to government to offer logistical and financial support to children who had been transformed through the Borstal Institute, so that such children could depend on skills acquired at the Institute for their livelihood.
