Former Senior Minister and Chief Patron of Disability Options Ghana, Mr Joseph H. Mensah, on Saturday urged government to give more financial and technical support to disabled sports to encourage people with disability to take to sports and help the Association prepare towards the Paralympics Games in 2012. Mr Mensah noted that the country has a lot of talents amongst the disabled who are capable of performing well in international competitions but lack of equipment, support and commitment by stakeholders makes it difficulty for the Association and country to raise formidable teams for such competitions. The former Senior Minister who said this at the third disabled sports competition in Ho noted that with the support of government, corporate bodies and other stakeholders and sponsors, the country would be capable of raising good teams to represent the country instead of the inclusion of able persons in such teams. Mr Mensah said even though the Paralympics standards were high, with the availability of resources and the necessary support, the country was capable of raising worthy national teams to meet those standards to lift the flag of Ghana high. He advised 'People With Disabilities' to develop interests in various sporting events and show commitment to their goals to attract sponsorships. The participants who were drawn from across the Volta Region and other parts of the country, competed in tricycle racing, blind athletics and cycling and wheel chair races. They also competed in goal ball, showdown and swimming with trophies presented to winners of the various events.
