Government has rendered an apology to residents in Accra and adjoining towns for the inconveniences caused by vehicular traffic jam as a result of Friday’s ECOWAS meeting.

The capital came to a standstill following the extraordinary session of the Heads of States and Governments conveged in Accra to deliberate on the security in the region. 

High on the agenda was the threat of Islamist sect Boko Haram to the peace in Nigeria and the sub-region. Boko Haram is currently holding over 200 school girls it kidnapped some six weeks ago.

The meeting created chaotic scenes on the streets of the capital as many roads were blocked by the security without notice from the police to road users.

             

But speaking on Radio Gold’s current affairs programme, Alhaji and Alhaji Saturday, Presidential Staffer, Dr. Clement Apaak, stated the government regrets the inconvenience resulting from the communication gap.

“It is significant that we apologize for any fallout or any unintended pressure that may have come to the good people of this country as a result of the event that we all agree was very important.

“…Anyone who knows the nature of our President and this government would know that this was not intended but sometimes situations occur and we just have to accept them for what they are and then learn from those experiences as a way of putting in place mechanisms that an instance like that does not occur,” he explained.

He said that though the event caused vehicular traffic in the capital, the meeting was worthwhile.

According to Dr Apaak, the summit was largely informed by the current challenges faced by “our sister nations of Nigeria and Mali.”

He noted it was crucial as ECOWAS Chairman that, President Mahama sympathizes with his fellow Heads of State and help resolve the immediate concern of rescuing over 200 abducted girls in Nigeria.
