The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the family of the late Bashiru Isak, will conduct an independent autopsy to establish further details surrounding his death in South Africa.

The decision follows unsuccessful attempts by Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria and Mr Isak’s family to obtain an autopsy report from South African authorities.

In an update to its earlier statement issued on July 1, 2026, the Ministry confirmed that the Ghanaian who was fatally shot multiple times in Khayelitsha, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa, was indeed Bashiru Isak, a law-abiding citizen and father of three.

The Ministry said this confirmation contradicts earlier claims by some South African officials regarding the identity of the deceased.

With the consent of the bereaved family, the Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Pretoria, facilitated the repatriation of Mr Isak’s remains, which arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

Family members and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present at the airport to receive the body, which has since been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital.

The Ministry said the independent autopsy is aimed at providing clarity on the circumstances surrounding Mr Isak’s death, as Ghana continues to seek justice for the late father of three.

“The Ministry and Mr Isak's family have agreed to conduct an independent autopsy, particularly as our High Commission in Pretoria and Mr Isak's family have been unsuccessful in obtaining an autopsy report from South African authorities,” the statement said.

The Government of Ghana has renewed its call for justice, urging South African authorities to expedite investigations, make arrests, and prosecute those responsible for the killing.

“There must be no room for silence or cover-ups in the gruesome killing of Mr Isak,” the Ministry stated.

Following the completion of the autopsy, Mr Isak will be buried in accordance with Islamic customs.

The Government of Ghana said it remains committed to pursuing all appropriate diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure justice is served.

The Ministry extended its deepest condolences to Mr Isak’s parents, wife, children, friends and loved ones.
