Local Government Minister Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah says the State is taking active measures to fence large acres of land belonging to the Parks and Gardens in Cantonments, Accra.
In the last few weeks, North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has been publishing documents allegedly showing private developers claiming to have secured title deeds to these lands.
The North Tongu MP advised the Estate Developers to refund the money to whoever sold it them since they were prime lands and were not to be sold.
Subsequently answering questions on the floor of Parliament, the Local Government Minister explained that government will do everything to secure the land from encroachment.
“The ministry is taking measures to provide fencing by walling the lands to prevent any encroachment. Mr Speaker, currently as a minister, I am still pursuing the matter and I am engaging all stakeholders to protect and secure the titles of these lands, especially those that do not have one," he said on July 4.
The private developers had since taken the land dispute to court because they presumed that they had original documentation. However, the Minister said documents were not original.
“On the particular case on the Department of Parks and Gardens lands in Cantonments, the recent claimant to the portion of the land indicated that he acquired a title to the land in contention but could not produce same after he took the matter to court.
"The court subsequently dismissed the case and requested the plaintiff to re-enter the case with the proper documentation," he added.
The Techiman South MP assured that the land was still a property of the government and his outfit would ensure that it reclaims it.
Meanwhile, Mr Ablakwa has asked the Minister to engage with the Lands Ministry to ensure that the land is protected from encroachers.
