Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, Abu Kabiebata Kansangbata, says government has begun a programme to train more midwives as part of efforts to reduce maternal mortality in the country.Health experts have linked maternal mortality rate to the lack of midwives in some communities, but Mr. Kansangbata said he is committed to change the trend.According Joy News' Upper West regional Correspondent, Mr Kansangbata said the programme, estimated at GH¢500,000, is in line with President John Mahama's vision to improve maternal healthcare in the country.The Minister indicated the project is also aimed at ensuring availability of enough midwives in the region, after the current midwives, most of whom have reached retirement age, give up work.The Deputy Minister said "It is our hope that before 2015 we should be able to increase the ratio of midwifery in the country" bemoaning the ratio of midwives to patients in the country.
