Groupstand for Peace, Growth and Development is calling for transparency in the December 2024 polls.
In a press release issued by its Executive Director, Happy Agbenyenu, the group stated the importance of transparency in the electoral process for the upcoming in Ghana.
Mr Agbenyenu highlighted that a transparent process is crucial in preventing potential violence from disgruntled party members and their supporters.
“In light of the recent statement by the Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensa, urging political parties to accept the results of the upcoming polls in good faith, we wish to express our concerns and recommendations,” he said.
Appeal to the Electoral Commission
The group urged the Electoral Commission to act as an independent referee during the December 7th election, addressing concerns about the Commission’s impartiality.
The statement referenced former President John Mahama’s recent remarks about perceived biases in the EC’s appointments during his interview at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
The NDC flagbearer specifically cited the alleged favouritism of the EC towards the governing party.
Impartiality and Independence
The statement questioned whether these accusations against the EC are grounded in truth.
It acknowledged the innovations aimed at ensuring credible elections but stressed that the true test lies in the verdict of the Ghanaian electorate.
“Have they truly experienced elections characterised by transparency, fairness, and freedom?”
The group warned that these concerns, if not addressed before the elections, could undermine the democratic progress made by the country.
It called on the Electoral Commission to implement additional measures to guarantee its independence and impartiality.
Mr Agbenyenu also urged the Commission to embark on a comprehensive educational campaign across Ghana to engage and inform the populace about the electoral process.
“The populace must be actively engaged and informed,” the statement concluded.
