Actress Juliet Ibrahim is calling on Africans to desist from using the term “half-caste” to describe her and others of mix race origin.
According to her, it is the most derogatory term to describe a mixed-race person or someone with mixed ethnicity.
Juliet Ibrahim wrote on Instagram that many people who hold on to the term 'half-caste' do not see these Africans with lighter skin as “black enough” or even as a black woman.
“Now this is exactly, what we are fighting to correct amongst ourselves and the world at large. I am a black woman! When I’m abroad amongst the whites, I am classified and recognised as a black woman, however, right amongst us Africans I’ll be referred to as a Half-Caste!”
Juliet Ibrahim stressed that it is important to recognize that mixed-race or light-skinned women or men are no less black than their darker-skinned peers.
The actress stated that children should be trained to accept people as they are and not define people by their race or the colour of their skin.
“Let’s all say NO to RACISM, TRIBALISM, COLORISM and SEGREGATION,” she added.
