A last gasp header from Edward Affum earned glorious Accra Hearts of Oak a priceless 3-2 victory over RTU in a game pregnant with controversy and questionable refereeing decisions.
Coach of RTU Mohammed Gargo was sent off late in the game for unruly and unprofessional conduct after he charged onto the field to protest a decision by referee S. Bortey.
Bortey had whistled play on when an RTU player took an awkward fall after a strong challenge mid-air with a Hearts defender, a decision Gargo thought should have gone in his favour.
In anger, he burst onto the field with gestures leading to his sending off. On his way out, the RTU coach had a little brush with some Hearts fans and got his problems compounded when Mfum scored in added time to secure the points for the Phobians.
The Phobians crawled back into the game with a legitimate penalty after Mfum was tripped in the 80th minute. Iddrissu Moro stepped up and converted the penalty much to the relief of the Hearts faithful.
Moro Abubakar had earlier on in the first half fluffed a questionable penalty awarded to the Phobians. Hassan Mohammed, the former Hearts skipper, now with RTU won possession with a superb sliding tackle in the vital area but the Referee Bortey surprisingly pointed to the spot.
Hearts’ Mahatma Otoo set the boring game alive with a determined goal in the 15th minute and to compensate the fluffed penalty by Abubakar.
In the 40th minute Hanan Gyima leveled things up for the visitors with a superb diving header to end the first half.
In the second half, Laryea Kingston who was suspended by sacked Coach CK Ackunnor made his debut in the season and he did not disappoint.
The ex-Black Stars midfielder brought a lot of stability to the Hearts midfield with some deft touches and great balls to Otoo and Affum upfront but it was the visitors again who got their noses in front in the 56th minute.
Hearts fought back strongly for the equalizer before getting the match winner late in the game.
