Victims of last Saturday’s fire outbreak at old Fadama in Accra say they want the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area , Nii lantey Vanderpuije and other government agencies to assist them with building materials to reconstruct their homes.

According to them, over 500 residents have been displaced as a result of the fire. The residents, who mainly sleep in wooden structures, complained of sleeping on the floor and benches because they don’t have anywhere to go.

Joy FM's Michaela Anderson visited the area on Monday, and reported that young men and women were busily rebuilding their homes, which were razed down by fire last Saturday.

The women carried head pans filled with sand to their various sites while the men busily mixed mortar for the construction works. Children, who looked unkempt were also seen playing in the debris with flies hovering around them.

Residents speculated that the fire was sparked by illegal electricity connection that had become rampant in the vicinity.

Though, they were rebuilding their structures, they said a visit by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije would have been welcomed.

Residents, however, said they needed building materials to reconstruct their structures and they appealed to government to help them in that respect.

Until the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and other government officials get to the aid of victims of the fire outbreak at Old Fadama, the residents will continue to sleep on the bare floor.

Additionally,  if the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) does not step in to ensure that proper measures are taken, access to the market would remain a problem.

 Meanwhile, personnel of the Fire Service, who managed to bring the blaze under control said the use of illegal and old electrical wires by residents caused the fire. 

The fire service has said unless recommendations they make after such fires are implemented by the assembly, the problem would persist.
