The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Aseidu Nketia has rubbished suggestions that the ‘Heroes Fund’ established by the party is to promote violence. According to him, the fund is to appreciate people who incur some misfortunes in their service to the party as well as demonstrate the party's concern about their living conditions. "The fund is for victims of violence and not for perpetrators of violence" he added. The Heroes Fund, registered as a non-governmental organisation to be managed by a seven-member committee chaired by Ambassador Victor Gbeho, will also cater for the families of party members who die while working for the party. President J.E.A Mills and Vice President John Mahama have both donated GHS10,000 (Ten thousand Ghana cedis) and GHS20,000 (Twenty thousand Ghana cedis) respectively to support the fund. But the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns about the establishment of the fund. Leaders of the party say the fund will rather encourage hooliganism and promote election-related violence in the 2012 general elections. Johnson Aseidu Nketiah, also known as General Mosquito, however on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Senprogramme Wednesday, opined that the ‘Heroes Fund ‘is to demonstrate to Ghanaians that the NDC is a party worth dying for. He said the fund is not to promote election-related violence or to reward party members who would engage in violence ahead of the 2012 elections as is being suggested by the NPP. Mr. Asiedu Nketiah stated that the party would not have registered the Heroes Fund if it was to promote violence. General Mosquito added that the NPP have always sought to paint the NDC black to Ghanaians in their desperate attempt the win the 2012 elections at all cost. The NDC scribe urged the NPP to contribute to the fund since the beneficiaries are Ghanaians. Meanwhile, the first beneficiary of the 'Heroes Fund' is musician Jewel Acquah, composer of NDC‘s party anthem. He received GHS10,000 the loss of economic patronage he endured in his career following his composition of the NDC anthem. Story by: Adwoa Gyasiwaa/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
