The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee is under investigations for conflict of interest following a directive by the Speaker of Parliament.
The Speaker, Edward Doe Adjaho, in a rare move today directed the leadership of the house to investigate, NPP MP for Dormaa West, Kwaku Agyeman Manu who is accused of writing a letter to solicit sponsorship from local IT firm, Rlg.
The Chairman wanted Rlg to sponsor some MPs to undertake an auditing study tour in Gambia.
The Speaker fears, this could possibly place Mr. Agyeman Manu in a conflict of interest situation. Mr. Adjaho announced on the floor today he is taking a serious view of the matter.
NPP MP for Old Tafo, Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei disagreed with the Speaker.
He argued that relying on newspaper publications as a basis to do what the Speaker ordered amounted to setting a bad precedence.
"I don't want to mention names" he said and added the House ought to be equitable and consistent because several newspaper reports about MPs have gone unchecked.
He preferred that leadership discuss the matter as a "Committee of the whole" instead of bringing the issue out in the open.
He said it was particularly disturbing that Mr. Adjaho issued the order at a time Mr. Agyemang Manu was out of the country.
The Speaker said the veracity of the publication was a different matter. He said the proper committee - Privilege Committee - would look into the issue.
The chairman of the said committee is currently out of the country.
Daniel Batidam, Head of African Parliamentary Network Against Corruption spoke on Top Story. He said private companies have interest, parliamentarians must "thread cautiously". They may want to unduly influence their work, he said.
He called for a criteria to regulate the relationship between parliament and private sector.
