About a hundred houses in the Western Region have been submerged in flood after the Ankobra River overran its banks.
Several properties worth thousands of cedis in Himan and Ankobra in the Prestea Huni- Valley Municipality according to reports, have been lost.
Affected families, who have been displaced by the November 1 flood, are reportedly seeking refuge in some classrooms and churches within the communities.
In an interview with ModernGhana, the Assembly Member for Himan Electoral Area, Badu Samora, said that Municipal Assembly, alone, does not have the capacity to deal with the effects of the flood and provide assistance to the victims.
“This is beyond the assembly,” he said.
Some families have resorted to scooping the water from their residence as a way of dealing with the problem at hand. Others are choosing to sleep in their houses after they successfully rid them of the water.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Prestea Huni- Valley Municipality has, however, advised against families sleeping in their affected houses. NADMO suggests the families move to higher ground or seek shelter from relatives with residents far from the affected areas.
