A group of fishermen from Takoradi in the early hours of last Saturday dragged a big fish suspected to be a humpback whale to the Takoradi Fishing Harbour in the Western Region.
According to the fishermen, the size of the humpback whale could not be immedi-ately determined but could be compared to the length of a normal canoe and the width of a saloon car.
Humpback whale is a species of baleen whales with the adults ranging in length from 12 to 16 metres and weighing approximately 36,000 kilos.
A Spokesperson for the group said the humpback whale got entangled in their net and caused the canoe to capsize. Realising that they were in danger, they called for help and succeeded in overpowering the creature and dragged it ashore after an hour of struggle.
He said to their advantage, the movement of the whale was slow when they first saw it and suspected it might have swallowed something which made it weak, and therefore did not pose much danger when it was being dragged to the shore.
According to them this is the first time they had seen a whale at that part of the beach.
