Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., says he is very disappointed that the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Member of Parliament for Okaikoi South, Nana Akomea could openly state the NPP will use intemperate language on the leadership of the NDC with equal measure, if NDC members dare to insult their (NPP) leadership.
The seasoned journalist expressed worry that the spokesperson of Akufo-Addo’s Campaign team is endorsing “politics of insults” albeit indirectly.
“I was completely and totally ashamed when Nana Akomea made that statement. I was particularly disappointed especially coming from someone we consider as one of the finest gentlemen we can find in our politics. All of a sudden, it is Nana Akomea who is sitting on radio saying that if you insult us, we will insult you the more…this is totally shocking…,” he said whiles contributing to a panel discussion on Radio Gold’s “Alhaji and Alhaji” programme.
Commenting on the alleged derogatory statement by John Kumah, spokesperson for the Young Patriots (a youth wing of the NPP), regarding President Mills’ sexual preference that saw him (Kumah) taste the power of the police service for a few hours, the Insight newspaper Editor said he finds it hard to comprehend why politicians think that the only way to catch the attention of the public is by raining insults on each other.
“The problem with politics of insults is the encouragement and the sponsorships that such people get from their supporters after making such scandalous comments. The people of Ghana are discerning and so they will make their own judgment…so if politicians are only interested in heaping insults on each other, they (people) are discerning and so they will judge,” he said.
According to him, the difference between the admonishing made by President Mills and the stance of the NPP regarding the issue of politics of insults is that, whiles the president has come out several times to condemn it, the NPP has not; "to them if they are insulted, they will insult back…thus endorsing it publicly.”
President John Evans Atta Mills on Thursday, July 28, appealed to the clergy to lead the crusade to halt the politics of insults and the growing incidence of false prophets that had plagued the society in recent times.
While commending a section of the Christian community of being outspoken on the ills, the President stated that politics of insults and the influx of religious charlatans would do the nation a lot of harm than any good.
“Now we’ve got to a stage where people say anything regardless of whether it is true or not. Now my worry is the kind of lesson that we’re teaching the young ones who are coming up, that you use intemperate language, you subject yourself to verbal violence and all that without due regard for the right of other people,” the President said.
President Mills expressed these concerns when a delegation from the Methodist Church of Ghana led by the Presiding Bishop, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu.
