The immediate past Head of the National Cardiothoracic Center (NCC), Prof Kwabena Frimpong Boateng says he prepared his handing over notes four years ago as the Director for the Center.
Prof Frimpong Boateng said he knew there would be a time that he would hand over that office so he started preparing his handing over notes as the director for the center to his successor. He however believed the timing for terminating his appointment was wrong, because handing over to his successor at the Center is a gradual process.
Even though the heart surgeon admitted that doctors at the Cardio Center are competent to run the place, Prof. Frimpong Boateng stressed that handing over at the Center is entirely different from other public services.
A few days after the termination of his appointment as the Honourary Director at the National Cardiothoracic Center, Prof Frimpong Boateng told Adakabre Frimpong Manso on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem Tuesday that he will continue to provide his selfless service to the nation despite the termination of his appointment.
He maintained that he will respond to calls from any part of Ghana only if there are resources to work with.
On Thursday August, 24 2011, the Health Minister, Joseph Yieleh Chireh signed a letter in which he directed Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng to consider his appointment duly terminated with immediate effect.
The dismissal has been met with scorn and protestations from the medical association with doctors at the Cardio Centre laying down their tools in solidarity with their sacked boss, but President Atta Mills says he has given a one month room for Prof Frimpong Boateng to prepare his handing over notes.
Surgeons and Nurses at the NCC embarked on a sit down strike on Monday to demand his restoration. One death is reported to have been recorded at the centre.
Prof Frimpong Boateng argued that he is not the problem at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), but lack of resources like Oxygen and other resources are the problems facing the country’s premier hospital.
Prof Frimpong Boateng disclosed that close relatives of his died from preventable heart-related causes, but because at the the time the country had no such professionals to save the lives of these people, he decided to take the bull by the horn and use his knowledge to help his country.
He said this culminated in the establishment of the NCC in 1991 when he came from Germany after acquiring knowledge as a heart surgeon.
Even though he encouraged Ghanaians to have the sense of patriotism, he quickly noted, the attitude of some Ghanaians does not make the country worth dying for, noting in sadness that, the country has failed to honour its heroes.
Meanwhile, Prof. Frimpong Boateng has described as immature, claims in certain quarters that his dismissal could arise from the fact that he belongs to the campaign team of opposition New Patriotic Party's flag-bearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
