National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Kwabena Minta Akandor says he will quit politics if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) wins the Presidential Election Petition before the Supreme Court. Sounding very optimistic of the NDC’s chances in the case, he said the petitioners' evidence have proven that the court's case is a total waste of time. "If we [NDC] lose this case in court I will stop politics. You don’t need to go to Harvard University to know that this court case is a journey to nowhere," he stressed. Kwabena Minta Akandor was speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday. The NPP is challenging the legitimacy of President John Mahama who was pronounced winner of the 2012 election by the Electoral Commission. The opposition party has alleged massive irregularities in the presidential election and is therefore praying the Supreme Court to overturn the verdict of the EC. But members of the ruling party who believe they won the elections legitimately say the final verdict will be in their favour. In support, Kwabena Minta Akandor said he will be extremely surprised if the petitioners emerge victorious in the case. According to him, so far the petitioners have not been able to prove that the supposed irregularities gravely affected the presidential results. The Juaboso MP was emphatic that irregularities in an election are inevitable but as to whether it will affect the final verdict of the results is what is important. The NDC man said anyone who understands the electoral process of the country will know that the petitioners have no case in court. He urged the NPP to desist from giving their vulnerable supporters "hopeless hope" and rather work toward the 2016 general elections. "As per the Constitution of this Republic, his Excellency President John Mahama is the president of this country and so the NPP must stop throwing dust into peoples eyes."
