Ghanaian dancer Incredible Zigi has rendered an apology to musicians for a statement he recently made regarding the role dancers play in promoting music.
Zigi had told Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM that dancers have becomne indispensable in music promotion, a reason he supported the call by World Dance Champion Adjetey Sowah for the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) to have a category for dancers.
The founder of the Afrozig Movement stressed that a platform like the VGMA organised by Charterhouse should consider including dancers in their subsequent editions.
“That is what we all have been looking forward to. Most of these songs that are getting recognition in Ghana are tailored by dancers. We spent much time on social media posting the songs.
“It’s like the artists are sleeping and we are the ones blowing the song. Dancers need to be awarded on a big platform like the VGMA,” he said.
His submission seems to have irked a number of people who thought he was being condescending to the musicians. His critics had asserted that if the artistes were sleeping, he wouldn't have gotten songs for his performances.
In a press statement, however, he mentioned that his comment was misunderstood.
"I was recently interviewed on Ghana's esteemed media outlet (Hitz FM) discussing the important topic of recognizing dancers on major entertainment platforms, given the vital role they play in promoting music.
Regrettably, it seems that my comments have been misunderstood, and I would like to clarify that we are all interconnected in the same creative family," he stated.
Zigi emphasised that he acknowledged the importance of working together with musicians.
"In reality, all I intended to say was we are all part of the same artistic ecosystem, and our collaborations are what make the industry thrive. Dancers help bring the music created by our hard working musicians to life through our incredible talent, creativity and dance routines hence the quest for recognition through award platforms. It is the synergy between artists and dancers that truly makes the magic," he added.
He, therefore, apologised and called on creatives to hold each other's craft in high esteem.
"I apologize for any offense caused and want to emphasize my respect for artists and the entire entertainment industry. Let's celebrate each other's talents and work together to create unforgettable art.
Thank you for your understanding, and I look forward to a future filled with incredible collaborations and positive energy," he noted.
This comes on the back of a recent renaissance in the dance fraternity. Dancers are now getting more commercial influence than they did a few years ago.
While these dancers call on music award schemes to award them, they have about three dance awards that celebrate their efforts.
