The outspoken New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member for Parliament Asikuma Odoben Brakwa, Paul Collins Appiah Ofori says time has come to discipline politicians who insult their political opponents.
According P C Appiah Ofori, insulting political opponents does not build a healthy nation and therefore condemned the politics of insults that is gradually eating into the moral fabric of the country.
The MP for Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa was speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday. He said politics of insults should not be rewarded.
The Executive Director of Danquah Institute, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, Saturday morning walked off Newsfile, a live radio and TV programme on Joy FM and Multi TV, after referring to comments of the Deputy Environment and Science Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah as stupid.
Dr Omane Boamah had described Dr. J.B. Danquah, a founding father of the New Patriotic Party antecedent, the UP and after whom the Institute Gabby heads is named, as a CIA Agent.
P. C Appiah Ofori argued that Dr. Omane Boamah’s claim that the late J. B Danquah was a CIA agent, was unwarranted, and that he deserved the "what is this stupidity" response from Gabby Ochere Darko.
P C Appiah Ofori also argued that Gabby Ochere Darko did not err by referring to Dr. Omane Boamah's comments as stupid. He blamed the Deputy Minister for initiating the insults.
He said president Atta Mills should discipline members of his party who insult political opponents. "The time has come to discipline politicians who err" he stressed.
A Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Ransford Gyampo called on political leaders to expel people who engage in politics of insult from their political camps.
"[I] expect Nana Akufo-Addo to expel Gabby from his campaign team, political leaders should show leadership by example," he said
He added that politicians should have the will to expel their members who insult thers.
"If the country they are seeking to lead is without peace they cannot lead the country, they cannot lead a chaotic nation, if they have interest of the nation at heart, this is what they should do", Ransford Gyampo stressed.
