Ivory Coast qualified for next year's World Cup after drawing 1-1 with Malawi on Saturday to clinch top spot in Group E.
Chelsea striker Didier Drogba scored just three minutes after coming on as a 65th-minute substitute in the game in Blantyre to secure the draw that sealed their place.
Elsewhere, African champions Egypt kept alive their hopes of reaching the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after beating Zambia 1-0 on Saturday.
Africa's remaining two places at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa could be decided on the penultimate weekend of the qualifying campaign.
Ghana have already qualified for their second successive finals and they have now been joined by the Ivory Coast.
Tunisia and Cameroon can also reach South Africa if they win this weekend and other results go their way.
