John Jinapor, spokesperson for Vice President John Mahama has played down suggestions he should be sacked for putting out inaccurate information about how much funds the World Bank was committing towards four major road projects in the country.
Some 24 hours after the public was told that the Vice President had managed to convince the World Bank to make available 400 million US dollars for early completion of the ongoing road projects, his office issued a statement saying the information was inaccurate.
This is about the third time Mr. Jinapor has given information found to be wrong or misleading.
But he believes calls for his head are misplaced.
In his defense, Mr Jinapor said “Our work is a very difficult job.
Sometimes you rely on information that is given to me to churn out.
We did not participate in that meeting. This was the information given to us and we trusted the person and put it out.”
He said once they come out to clarify issues and apologise when errors are made, the issue of losing credibility does not arise.
According to him, "the story is accurate, yes, there is commitment, they want to help us, except that the figure was misquoted and it happens," adding "misquoting figures, I don’t think that it necessarily amounts to a deliberate attempt to churn out false information.”
