The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has distributed 83 outboard motors to fishermen from 14 fishing communities in the Keta Municipality at a cost of GH¢ 6,000 each.
The outboard motors, which cost GH¢ 12,500 were subsidized by government through the District Assembly Common Fund.
Madam Sherry Ayitey, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture who made the presentation on Tuesday at Keta, said the gesture was a “Presidential initiative” geared towards bettering the lives of the fishermen.
She said government would soon build landing sites along the beaches and also build workshops for the various associations.
She said by the close of August this year, her outfit would construct other facilities including sheds for children of fishmongers and cold stores for the preservation of fish in the area.
Madam Ayitey applauded the fisher folks for not engaging in illegal activities and urged them to take advantage of an insurance policy instituted for them.
Seth Kedey, Chief Fisherman, Keta Municipality, said the outboard motors would boost their economic activities.
