President Mwai Kibaki on Thursday nominated Ghana’s Chief Justice Georgina Wood, UK’s Former Lord Justice of Appeal Sir Stephen Sedley and Retired Judge of Quebec Court Loiuse Otis to sit on the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board.In his communication to the House, Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende forwarded the names and their CVs to the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee (CIOC) for consideration and report back to the House next Tuesday.He directed the House to debate the Committee’s report on the same day since they had already finalised vetting the other six nominees.On Tuesday, Mr Marende barred Parliament from debating the suitability of six nominees to the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board, until the Office of the President (OP) nominated three other members from the Commonwealth.He had explained that the board would be unconstitutional and incomplete without the three non-Kenyans who were appointed by the President last Thursday.CIOC had earlier announced that it would vet the six Kenyan nominees, as they were, and table their names to Parliament in an attempt to beat the constitutional deadlines.The Vetting of Judges and Magistrates Act states that there shall be nine members to the Vetting Board; six will be Kenyans and three shall be non Kenyans who have either served as Chief Justice or judges of a superior Court in the Commonwealth.The CIOC has already completed vetting Sharad Rao, Justus Maithya, Roseline Odhiambo, Prof Ngotho wa Kariuki, Meuludi Mabruki and Abdirashid Abdullahi.
