Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the paramount Chief of Ga Marshie, has expressed his unwavering commitment to the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) in its mission to enhance pension coverage within the informal sector.

During a courtesy visit by the NPRA management, led by Chief Executive Officer Mr. John Kwaning Mbroh, the paramount chief emphasised the significance of this initiative, stating, “It is a good initiative, and I am ready to support and partner with you to get the campaign to Ghanaians and those in the diaspora to join the 3-tier pension scheme.”

The visit served as an opportunity for the NPRA to share its mandates with the paramount chief and seek his influential backing in broadening pension coverage throughout the country. The focus, according to the NPRA, is on the informal sector, where many individuals currently lack access to reliable pension options.

The chief highlighted the importance of this initiative in combating old-age poverty and ensuring that citizens can secure a stable retirement income.

In his remarks, the chief praised the NPRA for undertaking this vital campaign aimed at extending pension access to those working in the informal economy. He encouraged Ghanaians, especially those in this sector, to shift their mindset and adopt a savings culture.

The chief assured the NPRA that his office would actively facilitate educational sessions to inform the public about the importance of pensions, inviting the Authority to participate in gatherings hosted by the Ga Traditional Council.

Moreover, the Ga Mantse pledged to lead efforts to engage with key stakeholders in the informal sector, including market leaders and community figures, to further the campaign and encourage enrollment in pension schemes that would help secure their futures.

Mr. John Kwaning Mbroh highlighted the concerning statistic that over 76% of Ghana's workforce is engaged in the informal sector, yet only 9% have access to any form of pension plan. He painted a stark picture of the future for many Ghanaian workers if this trend continues.

To address this issue, he outlined the Authority's plans to collaborate with churches, traditional leaders, prominent figures, and community influencers to broaden the reach and effectiveness of pension coverage initiatives across the nation.
