Bono East Regional Minister Kofi Amoakohene has called for more education on road safety for drivers to reduce the level of carnage on Ghana’s roads.
“We need to educate them [drivers] because where this particular accident occurred…is the nicest roads that we have,” the Atebubu-Amantin MP told Joy News.
He also explained that “Ghana is a developing nation without the sufficiency and everything. Even outside the country, the stops (digital checkpoints among others internally built) are there but there is still regulation that allows people to drive.”
His comments follow a fatal accident on the Kintampo-Tamale highway in the Bono East Region has left at least 30 people burnt to death on Monday morning.
According to eyewitnesses, the Yutong bus veered off into the opposite lane when its driver fell asleep behind the wheel.
The driver of the approaching Sprinter vehicle, according to reports tried to avoid the collision by heading for the bush but collided with the bus, leading to the accident.
Commenting on what government is doing to reduce the occurence of such incidents, the MP said, “We are developing and are yet to get to those places."
He is concerned though that "You could set the rules but who sits to check them?”
Mr Amoakohene also added that the driving profession contextually does not attract people with “some much higher IQs”.
