An expert jury has chosen the former Germany and current United States head coach Jürgen Klinsmann as 2015 German Football Ambassador. The decisive factors were his success as a German coach working abroad, his commitment to social causes and his contribution to enhancing Germany’s image around the globe.
Roland Bischof, the founder of the initiative German Football Ambassador, met Klinsmann at the StubHub Center Los Angeles to present with the award. Consul General Dr. Bernd Fischer was also present to honour the occasion. Klinsman will donate the monetary prize to the “Soccer for Success” programme that is run by the El Monte Community Building Initiative in Los Angeles and is supported by the US Soccer Foundation.
The charity provides developmental opportunities for children and youths, a cause that Klinsmann’s “Agapedia” Foundation has been supporting for years.
“I’m really happy that people appreciate my efforts. I’ve never really seen myself as an ambassador, so I’m honoured that my way of living and working in foreign countries has touched people this way,” explained Klinsmann. The 50-year-old has been Germany's coach between 2004 and 2006 and led the national team to a third place finish at the home World Cup. He scored 47 goals in 108 international fixtures as a player. In 1996 he captained the Germans to win the European Championship.
Apart from Klinsmann, Michael Nees and Eckhard Krautzun have also been chosen as German Football Ambassadors. Nees is the technical director of the Israeli Football Association and coaches their Under-19 team. Eckhard Krautzun has coached teams from all over the globe and has left a lasting mark on Asian and African football. The winners will be honoured at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin on 2nd June 2015.
