KMA launches Rapid Response Scheme to deal with sanitation

The KMA has launched yet another waste management innovation to complement its night sweeping exercise in checking and controlling littering in the garden city.

Groups of personnel in orange suits have been going round picking litter, mainly plastic waste.

Under the scheme, 150 people have been recruited and put in gangs of five and assigned to various lorry terminals and vantage points in the metropolis to pick the litter especially plastics which people throw around indiscriminately.

The sanitation Rapid Response Scheme code name “Orangi” is an initiative of the Kumasi Mayor Kojo Bonsu.

The Assembly has acquired two trucks, 150 picking sticks, 150 uniforms and 200 collection sacks for the scheme.

Mayor Kojo Bonsu explained at the launch of the programme on Monday, each member of the gang is assigned the collection of a particular kind of litter with emphasis on plastic waste.

“Whatever is gathered will be sold to plastic recycling companies as raw material”, He said.

The KMA’s night sweeping exercise introduced by the Mayor upon his assumption of office has been touted as effective in keeping the city clean.

The KMA boss said the scheme was purposefully designed to complement other existing schemes all geared towards making Kumasi satisfactorily clean.

Mayor Bonsu urged the sanitation workers to take good care of the equipment and also give the needed attention to the task at hand to keep the city clean.

He noted the scheme would not make a difference if the public do not complement the effort of the sanitation works by changing their littering habits.

“The assembly will enforce its bye-laws to complement the scheme’s efforts at controlling littering habits in the city,” City Mayor Kojo Bonsu told the press.

The Assembly has also set in motion the full cost recovery scheme based on incremental cost recovery and declining subsidy started in 2008.

The scheme which has now matured takes away the burden of the assembly paying subsidies to private contractors for services they render to domestic and commercial properties.
