The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has declared an indefinite strike in protest against exclusion from the university's governing council.
The dispute was triggered by the decision of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to nominate TEWU-GH’s rival group, the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), as a representative on the council.

TEWU-GH, which claims to hold the majority membership at the university, argues that the nomination of TEWU-TUC constitutes a clear violation of democratic principles of union representation and a deliberate act of marginalisation.
The union has therefore commenced industrial action.
In a press statement signed by Charles Arthur, KNUST Chairman of TEWU-GH, the union reiterated its commitment to due process and expressed strong opposition to any external interference in the university’s governance.

Arthur stated that the union would continue its strike until GTEC reverses its decision and rectifies the composition of the council to reflect what it deems fair representation.
This development marks a continuation of longstanding tensions between TEWU-GH and TEWU-TUC at KNUST, including previous disputes over council representation.
As the strike takes effect, the university community remains on edge, awaiting possible interventions to resolve the impasse.
